The Salt of the Earth

Leave from Salta early in the morning for the journey to Purmamarca, with its fine church and the Square Craft Market. After touring the village you move up the Cuesta de Lipan to the impressive Salinas Grandes, one of the most visited destinations in the puna region of Jujuy. This is an amazing place where the white landscape merges with the deep blue sky.

Bring sunglasses for this spectacular salt plain in a remote part of the puna, some 3,350m above sea level. This dried up lake in the Holocene is now a 500 square mile crust of salt up to half-a-meter thick. On a clear day, the blinding contrast between the bright sky and the cracked and crusty expanse of white is spellbinding. Over the year, wind strips much of the salt away and it's most spectacular after summer rains replenish it.
